Nourishing Your Body and Spirit When You Feel Ungrounded
As I have been discussing many times before, right now is a time where we have to protect our mind and spirit due to the fear mongering going on in the world. Between that and the energy shift happening currently, a lot of people will be feeling spaced out, anxious, or disconnected from the present moment. In a time like this, remaining grounded is of the utmost importance for both mental and emotional stability. Grounding is the process of reconnecting with your physical body through the senses and coming into union with the Earth’s energy. A simple yet effective way to do this is through the often-overlooked sense of taste. By mindfully focusing on certain nourishing foods, you can help bring your energy levels back down to Earth and effectively reconnect you with the present moment.
Let’s explore the best foods to eat when you’re feeling ungrounded so that you can remain in body and aware.
Why Do We Feel Ungrounded?
Before we dive into the foods, it’s important to understand why we might feel ungrounded in the first place. We experience this existence through different states of being: the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. All of these states, when imbalanced, can cause us to feel ungrounded.
Physical: Lack of nourishment – Skipping meals, eating processed foods, or consuming too many light, airy foods (like raw salads or juices) can make us feel unbalanced.
Emotional: Overwhelm – Anxiety, grief, or big life transitions can disrupt our connection to the physical world as we try to “escape”.
Mental: Too much mental activity – Overthinking, excessive social media use, oversocializing, consuming propaganda, etc.
Spiritual: Too much spiritual activity — Excessive deep meditation or energy work can create a sense of being “out of body.” Also spiritual attacks through programming and energy shifts can cause this.
Seasonal shifts – Fall and winter, or windy/cold weather, can throw off our grounding
Best Grounding Foods
These foods help anchor your energy, strengthen digestion, and bring you back to the present moment.
1. Root Vegetables (Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, etc)
Root vegetables grow deep in the earth, absorbing its energy, making it perfect for grounding. In TCM, they strengthen the Spleen and Stomach Qi which help you feel centered and physically present.
Roast them with warming spices like turmeric, mash them into soups, or bake them.
2. Whole Grains (Brown Rice, Oats, Quinoa, etc)
Whole grains are associated with the Earth element which means they help to create stability and support digestion. They’re also slow-burning carbs, giving sustained energy rather than quick spikes.
Have as a warm bowl of oatmeal with nuts and cinnamon in the morning, quinoa with roasted veggies, or brown rice with soup.
3. Warm, Cooked Foods (Soups, Stews, Bone Broth, etc)
According to TCM, warm foods nourish Yang energy and prevent excess Cold and Dampness (which can weaken digestion and cause mental fog). Spiritually, warm foods create a sense of comfort and presence in the body.
Bone broth with ginger, miso soup, or a lentil stew with root vegetables.
4. Nuts and Seeds (Almonds, Walnuts, Sunflower Seeds, etc)
Nuts and seeds are rich in healthy fats and proteins, which nourish the brain, balance the nervous system, and provide grounding energy. Walnuts strengthen the kidneys and almonds nourish the lungs.
A handful of walnuts and dates, almond butter on toast, or sesame seeds sprinkled on your meals.
5. Protein-Rich Foods (Lentils, Eggs, Grass-Fed Meat, etc)
Protein provides long-lasting nourishment which prevents energy depletion that can leave you feeling weak and floaty. In TCM, animal protein strengthens Kidney Qi, supporting endurance and resilience.
A soft-boiled egg with toast, a bowl of lentil soup, or grass-fed beef with roasted sweet potatoes.
6. Dark Chocolate (High-Quality, 70% or Higher)
Dark chocolate contains magnesium, which relaxes the nervous system. It is also linked to the Root Chakra which is associated with stability and survival instincts.
A piece of dark chocolate with nuts, a nice mug of cacao, or a piece after a meal.
Additional Grounding Practices While Eating
Eat Mindfully – Slow down + chew your food thoroughly so that you can savor the experience sensually.
Warm Drinks – Herbal teas can relax the nervous system (try to avoid cold drinks!).
Earthy Colors – Choose reds, oranges, and browns in your meals to align with Root Chakra energy.
